The Society was founded in 1951 as the Cambridgeshire Local History Council. The name was changed in 1983. The object of the Society is to encourage the study of local history. Monthly meetings are held in Cambridge, from October to March and an AGM in May. The lecture programmes cover a wide range of subjects. In the summer months excursions and visits to places of historic interest are arranged.

Since its earliest days the Society published a regular Bulletin, which included articles on a wide range of Cambridgeshire topics, interesting people, historic buildings and village histories. Members are encouraged to transcribe records and carry out research on their own or with others and to make the results available through the Review or elsewhere. In 1987 a Collectors Group was set up to encourage young people in particular and to interest those who collect unusual items not covered by other societies. Festivals of Local History are organised.

The Littleport Society
President: Roger Rudderham
Chairman: Grenville Goodson
Secretary: David Porter, 20a New River Bank, Littleport, Ely, Cambs, CB7 4TA.
Tel: 01353 860354
Email: LPSocIJC@aol.com

The Society consists of an expanding group of people who voluntarily work together in the interests of the community in which we live. Founded in 1987, it is the only non-political, non-sectarian organisation in Littleport whose membership is open to residents of all ages. Membership is open to anyone who has connections with, or an interest in, Littleport - wherever they live!

The Society believes in preserving what is structurally best of the past in our rapidly changing county, and is prepared to object to a proposal from any source which may threaten the character of Littleport and the well-being of its residents.

It thus very much concerned with the present in that too many social, welfare, educational and civic amenities are no longer available locally, and are determined to not only strive to retain those that are left, but to also consistently draw attention to the services that are needed in our town.

The primary aim is to ensure that Littleport retains its identity, and that every necessary facility its residents deserve is available locally, thus making and keeping it a place in which they, their children, and their children, are glad and proud to live.

The Society arranges a popular programme of open meetings. These are usually held on the first Tuesday of every month at the Village Hall, when guest speakers come along to give an informative talk, almost invariably with a supportive slide-show. The evenings occasionally include entertainment by local musicians.

There is no charge for admission to any meeting, or for refreshments provided, although a plate is kept by the door in which those who wish and can afford to do so may quietly place a nominal contribution to Society funds on leaving.

For those interested in the environment there is a Natural History group whose aims are - ‘To observe, record, and conserve the diversity of the natural history of the Parish of Littleport’.

Meetings are held through the winter months with speakers who give advice and training on a variety of related subjects, linked to the main project of monitoring and recording all aspects of plant and animal life in Littleport.

For Family History enthusiasts the Society has a complete set of photocopies of the Baptism, Marriage, and Burial registers of St. George’s and St Matthew’s Churches in Littleport and of St. John’s at Little Ouse. The Family History group is currently indexing these (over 46,000 entries to date), and other documents in our possession, additional members of this group would be welcomed!

The Society is also collecting Family Trees of Littleport related families. As of March 2002 there are over one hundred and fifty-six trees with more than forty-four thousand names in the index to the set of trees

The Society, ever since its formation, has been collecting photographic and documentary reminders of Littleport, past and present. These papers had been spread over various locations but are now being moved into our new headquarters at ‘The Barn’ in the Main Street car park.

The Barn has been refurbished with the aid of grants from the European Community and the East Cambs. District Council.

The building is shared by the Parish Council on the ground floor and the Society who’s archives occupy the top floor.

As a member you will receive copies of their current program of activities, and a quarterly newsletter which includes reminders of open meetings and programmed events, and their annual report
