Monumental Inscriptions

Members have been transcribing the memorial inscriptions in Cambridgeshire graveyards and churches since the Society began. Indexed transcripts, with plan, are produced for each location and copies deposited in Cambridge Record Office and the Library of the Society of Genealogists. Every churchyard in Old Cambridgeshire (with the exception of Guilden Morden) has been recorded and the Isle of Ely is about 50% transcribed. No doubt some of the inscriptions recorded in the early days have now been worn away and the existence of Society transcripts has ensured that the information is not lost completely.

Our aim for 2001 was to complete Mill Road Cemetery, Cambridge which is the burial ground for several churches within the city. This was achieved and we publicly acknowledge the large amount of time and effort put into the project by Alan Bullwinkle and his helpers.

A Search Service into the MI transcripts is available or complete parishes can be bought on microfiche from the bookstall.

Summary indexes of recently completed churchyards are published in the Journal.

Help with recording MIs is always welcome. Please contact the MI Co-ordinator,
Alan Bullwinkle, 1 Joscelynes, Stapleford, Cambridge.
