National Burial Index (NBI)

The Aim

The Federation of Family History Societies (FFHS) has been coordinating the creation of a National Burial Index. The aim of the National Burial Index (NBI) for England and Wales is to assist family historians find burial records and in so doing will complement the International Genealogical Index (IGI) which, of course, is mainly a finding aid to baptisms and marriages. The NBI will become a national archive, giving worldwide access to sources held by local repositories and by family history societies and groups who are participating in the project. The intention is to produce a cumulative edition at approximately three-yearly intervals. A parallel project (not yet published) is taking place in Scotland under the supervision of the Scottish Association for Family History Societies.

The first edition of the NBI includes well over 5.4 million records from more than 4,400 parish, non-conformist and cemetery burial registers. These entries come from different types of sources, for example, parish registers, bishops' transcripts, earlier transcripts or printed registers. The NBI for England and Wales does not contain monumental inscription records.

Throughout the UK various Family History Societies have been contributing to the database and the Cambridgeshire FHS is no exception. We have our own NBI Coordinator. The CD can be bought from the FFHS.
