& CAMBRIDGESHIRE EXPLORER

|
The
Cambridge Explorer is an Interactive guide to Cambridge, its
Colleges, Churches, Streets & much more over the last
130 years. Produced by Hugo Brown and in association with
the Cambridgeshire Collection. Over 1,000 high resolution
photographs both New & Old starting from 1870. 5 Major
Categories Include: Streets, Colleges, Churches, Public Houses
& Trades. 500 Photographs have been supplied by The Cambridgeshire
Collection. 3 Highly Detailed Cambridge Maps. The W.P. Spalding
Maps of Cambridge for 1904, 1924 and 1949 have been included.
A full street index for 1949 links direct to the correct section
of the map. 5 Interactive Tours. There are tours of the town
centre using the 1904 W.P Spalding map as a guide. Including
colleges, churches & pubs and two city centre tours, one
around the turn of 20th century and the other around the turn
of the Millennium. 14,555 People & Businesses Included
in the 1904 Street Directory. The complete W.P. Spalding Street
Directory of Cambridge for 1904 has been fully indexed in
10 different ways: indexes of Pages, Streets, Surnames, Advertisements,
Businesses, Churches, Colleges, Occupations, House Names and
Public Houses. Each index entry includes a direct hyperlink
to the colour facsimile of the original page of the Directory.
The
Cambridgeshire Explorer is not to be confused with the original
Cambridge Explorer CD. It's was a mammoth project which covers
"Old" Cambridgeshire. There are approximately 1,700
photographs (1,000 from the Cambridgeshire Collection) with
indexing within a "photo-album" which allows you
to look at all the photographs in order without having to
go back and forth from the indexes.
There
are 189 different locations listed on the CD covering all but
the smallest hamlets. There are photos of nearly every church
in the old county and there are a large selection of schools,
public houses, railway stations and village signs,
There
are at least 4 different maps. The main one being the Kelly's
1904 map that has been fully hyper linked from the map to
the individual locations of which there are 189 listed on
the CD. There are also 2 railway maps and a Cambridge Street
map.
Finally
there is an index of the Kelly's 1904 Directory with each
entry linking direct to the original page that will eventually
contain approximately 20,000 names as listed.
For
the Cambridgeshire Family Historian it is doubtful if there
has been such a comprehensive source of information.
